Biography
Bill Amick, a prolific golf course designer, advocates for the creation of more low-cost and user-friendly golf courses that are quick to play. These courses include those with par 70 to 72 and 9-hole, executive, and par 3 courses. He maintains that these easy-to-play courses are attractive to a broad spectrum of golfers, including juniors, beginners of all ages, less skilled players, those with a shorter hitting range and physically challenged individuals.
Amick points out the added benefit that these saving courses bring to developers and operators. They cut down on requirements for land, construction cost, annual maintenance and water for irrigation. Their environmental impact is also significantly less, which further enhances their appeal. These courses can operate independently or feature additional facilities like a driving range or be run alongside other courses.
Having designed over 75 courses across several states and countries, Amick's expertise in golf coursed architecture is well-established. His passion for golf course architecture was ignited during his teens, during which he was a talented player. He gained academic credentials in this field through a BA degree, and by working as a Graduate Assistant under a USGA Green Section Scholarship. His hands-on experience is the product of his time working for golf architects in Indianapolis and Atlanta. Since 1959, he has been running the oldest golf course architectural practice in Florida.
