Biography
Dick Nugent left an indelible mark in the realm of golf course design with a career primarily concentrated in the Midwest, particularly in Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin. A University of Illinois alumni, Nugent designed and revamped over 60 golf courses within these three states. However, his influence was felt not only regionally but stretched far beyond these borders, creating a diverse portfolio of golf courses.
Nugent's legacy is far-reaching and varied, including the design of an incredibly challenging course believed by many to be the toughest on earth. This feat juxtaposed with another achievement – the designing of one of the best nine-hole courses, showcases Nugent’s versatility and innovative scope. An additional feather in his cap includes his contribution to the design of a venue for major championships and the development of a previous long-term PGA Tour site.
Reflecting on Nugent's personality and work ethic, former American Society of Golf Course Architects President Bob Lohmann remembers him as an individual who lived life to the fullest, working hard yet never missing a moment to enjoy life. Lohmann, who kick-started his own architectural career under Nugent's stewardship, remembered Nugent as an industrious mentor who knew how to balance work with pleasure.
