Biography
Renowned golf course architect Ron Kirby passed away in Copenhagen, Denmark, during one of his many international trips. With over seven decades of career experience, Kirby had crafted golf courses in over 10 countries. He began his career in his native city, Beverly, Mass., working as a caddie and course maintenance crew. Kirby worked for midcentury architect Dick Wilson as a design associate. Following engagements with Robert Trent Jones, Sr., he established his own practice in 1970, about the same time as Pete Dye, who collaborated with Jack Nicklaus. Kirby enlisted the help of champion golfer Gary Player, which opened up more international opportunities for him.
Throughout his robust career, Kirby was involved in the design and construction of approximately 150 golf courses. His most renowned work is Old Head Golf Links in Ireland, hailed as one of the most scenic globally. GolfPass Managing Editor Jason Scott Deegan, who played at the course multiple times, praised Kirby's skill in crafting exciting golf experiences while enhancing the natural seaside cliffs.
AT the end of his career, Kirby was also responsible for courses in Asia, South Africa, and the Caribbean. His last design project was the overhaul of Barbados' Apes Hill Club, which launched in 2022. Kirby acknowledged the project's uniqueness, asserting it had everything a golf course could offer. He was married to Sally, who supported him throughout his travels until her passing in 2021. They had three children: Faye, Ron Jr., and Beverly.
